Originally a bookseller, John Debrett founded Debrett’s in 1769 and went on to publish the first edition of The Peerage and Baronetage. It was very much the ‘social network’ of its time – a guide
to the ruling class running Britain and its Empire. The Peerage remains in print today, the only up-to-date printed reference guide to the United Kingdom’s titled families: the 817 hereditary peers, 758 life peers and peeresses, and 1,298 baronets, and their descendants who form the fascinating tapestry of the peerage.
