When cutting the cake, traditionally the groom should place his right hand over the bride's right hand. They make the cut together, and the bride takes the first bite, then hands the piece to the groom.

Traditionally, the cake is cut after the meal and the speeches. It is announced by the master of ceremonies or toastmaster.

If the cake is being served as pudding, then it should be cut after the main course, allowing time for the caterers to plate it up.

Some couples choose to cut the cake but serve it later on during the reception. Slices should be left in a prominent position so that guests can help themselves during the party.

There is often leftover cake; ask the caterers to put slices in individual wedding cake boxes that are given to guests as they leave.
