The bride and groom should choose a song that suits their taste and, if they wish, keep it secret to surprise their guests. They must consider the pace and the length of the song, and check that the sentiment is appropriate for a wedding.

While a slow love song might seem the most obvious choice, a more upbeat number can be humorous and memorable for the guests.

Remember that the first dance is, after all, a form of entertainment for the guests as well as being a special moment for the couple.

The band or DJ must be briefed on when the couple will take to the floor, and must begin at exactly the right moment. The photographer must also be in place.

As the song ends, and the next track begins, the wedding party should be on cue to join the couple on the dance floor.

Traditionally, the groom should dance with each of the mothers, the bride with both fathers, the mother of the bride with the father of the groom, the father of the bride with the mother of the groom and the best man with the chief bridesmaid.

No First Dance

It is by no means compulsorily to have a first dance. For many couples, the thought of it is far too daunting. Instead, the couple should make sure the music starts with a bang and that the wedding party are on hand to get the dancing started.
