The usual means of announcing an intended marriage is the publication of the banns.

The banns are read in the parish church where the wedding will take place and in the parish churches of both the bride and groom (if these are different).

They are read on three consecutive Sundays within three months prior to the marriage; the couple are usually present for at least one announcement.

Other Forms

• Common licence (where only a day's notice is needed, often used where there is an imminent and unavoidable departure overseas)
• Special licence (i.e. for a church which is not the couple's parish church, but holds special meaning for them)
• By authority of the Superintendent Registrar's office (where relatives-in-law wish to marry).
• The priest will advise the couple if and when any of these more rare formalities are needed.
