Founded in 1932 and the oldest film festival in the world, Venice is a cineaste's dream. Set against the glamorous backdrop of the Venice Lido, the Festival is centred on the Palazzo del Cinema, an Art Deco building that was inaugurated in 1937.
The Golden Lion award is awarded to the best film screened at the festival and is one of the most prestigious in international cinema. Recent winners include: Mike Leigh's Vera Drake, Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, Jia Zhangke's Still Life, Ang Lee's Lust, Caution and Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler.
In 2012 the Artistic Director of the 69th Venice Film Festival was Alberto Barbera.
