Royal Highland Show

Spread over four days in mid-June at the Royal Highland Showground in Edinburgh, the Royal Highland Show 2013 features almost 2,000 livestock exhibitors and competitors appearing from all over the British Isles. As well as beef and dairy cattle, there's almost every sheep breed native to the UK, dairy goats, and horses and ponies, including the three main native equine breeds.
There are many other competition classes, including Farriery, Honey-making, Sheep-Shearing, Cheese and Butter Making. There are even Ice Cream-making competitions, where experts judge vanilla, chocolate and strawberry flavours.
Show Jumping competitions at the show attract many famous names from across the UK.
At the Rural Crafts Marquee, you can learn about bagpipe making, saddlery and willow weaving. Music includes an appearance by the Highland Band Pipes and Drums.
A major initiative promoting tourism, renewable energy and food production is being planned for the 2013 show.
The project is being driven by the Presidential Team from the Highland region of The Royal Highland & Agricultural Society of Scotland, including President Jamie Williamson and Vice Presidents David Brown, Ronald Duncan, Ewan Macdonald and Ian Urquhart.
Under the title "Highland Heritage, Land of Opportunity" the plan is to stage a centrepiece exhibit in the show's Food and Drink exhibition featuring local natural produce. A further exhibit will be created in the showground's Countryside Area showcasing renewable energy and a full range of outdoor activities.
