Doncaster officially opens the Turf Flat Racing Season with this historic race, ending the season with the November Handicap.

Originally, as its name implies, run at Lincoln Racecourse from 1858, this historic race was moved to Doncaster in 1965 so that it could be run over a straight mile. It takes pride of place on Saturday afternoon, with prize money of £125,000.

The handicap race for 4-year-olds and upwards always draws a large field - breaking all Jockey Club records in 1958, when there were 58 runners. The William Hill Spring Mile provides a consolation for those horses that fail to qualify for the main event.

The two-day event continues on Sunday afternoon with a number of events including The Doncaster Shield and The Pat Eddery Racing Club Handicap Stakes.

This weekend is one of the highlights of the Doncaster season, and an excellent outing for all the family. Children can be kept entertained with bouncy castles, face painting, a magic show and Johno the Clown, and under-16s are admitted free.
