The Irish racing season ends on a high note with this classic Group 1 race, open to thoroughbreds which are three years old and above. It is run over a distance of one mile and six furlongs (2,816 metres).

Modelled on the English St Leger Stakes, the race was first run in 1915.

There is presently a bonus price of 500,000 Australian dollars for any winner who subsequently goes on to win the Melbourne Cup in the same year.

Royal Diamond, ridden by McCullagh, won the race in 2012.
