Inaugurated in 2011, the Indian Grand Prix will be the
16th event of the season.
There were plans to host an Indian Grand Prix since 1997, and there was competition to host the event between the cities of Hyderabad and Mumbai. In 2007 it was announced that the first Indian Grand Prix would take place in 2009 on the Jaypee Group Circuit in Greater Noida, just 57.4 km from the international airport at New Delhi. T
The circuit is 5.141 kilometres (3.194 miles) and was designed by Hermann Tilke.
The circuit is part of a sports city being constructed 35 kilometres outside the Indian capital on a 2,800 acre site with areas set aside for the Formula One track and a 100,000-seater international cricket stadium.
In the inaugural 2011 event the double-world champion Sebastian Vettel led the race from start to finish. Vettel also won the 2012 event.
