Part of the Fowey Carnival, this royal regatta - which takes place in the southern Cornish town over the third full week of August - is among the country's best local regattas, with a family ambience.

Over the years Fowey Regatta has been visited by Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth. As well as sailing (including a quirky raft race and the Falmouth Working Boats race), it features a regular display by the Red Arrows, swimming races and water polo, a torchlit competition for the best decorated boat, carnival processions, live music, children's entertainment, a giant Cornish pasty ceremony, crab-catching and fireworks over the harbour.

Fowey, with its medieval and Tudor cottages, cobbled streets, and bustling waterfront, is an unspoilt Cornish town. It sits at the head of the Fowey estuary, a tranquil river fringed with woodland. Fowey is a sailor's paradise, and the estuary offers a vista of yachts, dinghies, motor launches and schooners, both sailing and at anchor.
