The 17-day-long Buxton Festival is one of Britain's biggest arts festivals. It draws around 35,000 people to the Peak District town each July to watch a number of rarely staged operas, from the baroque period to contemporary pieces, performed in English.

Past coups at the Buxton opera festival have included the UK premières of obscure works by Mozart, Rossini and Handel. A Literary Series runs in tandem with the opera programme, featuring talks by prominent novelists, biographers, political authors and others, and evenings see film screenings and various cultural events.

The festival will celebrate its 20th year in 2013. Below is an outline of the programme:
