Career: pianist; musical talent evident at age of four, admitted to Royal Acad of Music at age of twelve; debut: Wigmore Hall 1948, Henry Wood Promenade Concert (with Tchaikovsky's second Concerto) 1952; first postwar Br artist to make a solo tour of the USSR 1958; early influences incl: Clifford Curzon, Claudio Arrau, Myra Hess; recordings incl: complete Mozart Sonatas, Chopin Nocturnes and Impromptus, complete Chopin Waltzes and Polonaises, complete Grieg Lyric Pieces, Clementi, Schubert and Chopin (on square pianos), works by Schubert, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Schumann, Rachmaninov, Brahms, Scarlatti and Mendelssohn; composer of various piano pieces and songs, the song cycle Sequence (words by Charlotte Morrow) and various cadenzas to Beethoven and Mozart Concertos; series of subscription recitals and master classes for young artists 1968-78, prof Royal Acad of Music 1956-60, visiting prof Univ of W Ontario 1978-84, prof Royal Coll of Music 1992-2001; writer of articles on various aspects of music-making and composing, currently writing autobiography; Eric Brough Meml Prize 1944, Chopin Arts Award 1977; Hon DMus 1994; ARCM 1952, FRAM 1960
