There are many styles of yoga being taught today and although all are based on the same physical poses, each has a particular emphasis. Classes may combine different styles and individuals need not stick to only one type of class.

Yoga can offer a calming, meditative means of winding down. It can also involve demanding poses that will stretch your body, improving your breathing, musculature and balance. Before embarking on yoga classes you will need to find the class that is right for you.

Our simple guide to the most commonly-taught yoga styles is divided into two broad categories:

Slow-paced and Gentle Yoga
