Cycling for Children

Cycling develops the heart and lungs, which can support health and reduce risk of heart respiratory diseases. It increases energy expenditure which support a healthy body composition. It can provide a personal challenge and be very rewarding.

Make Cycling Count

  • Core work is highly recommended for cyclist to give the legs a strong foundation to work from.
  • Getting a professional to fit the bike to the child will increase cycling efficiency and minimise risk of injury by getting all joint angles at optimum ranges.
  • Teach your child to use the gears wisely to manage cadence; cadence is the speed you turn the pedals over per minute and is also called rpm (revolutions per minute).
  • As a general guide a cadence of 70-80rpm' is recommended.
  • Speed and cadence sensors on a bike are a good way to get feedback on riding.
  • Cycling with a smooth circular motion at the feet is more efficient than hammering  the pedals.
