The correct forms of address are as follows:
| Beginning of letter | Dear Chief Constable etc. (or by name) |
| End of letter | Yours sincerely |
| Envelope | Sir John Smith/John Smith, Esq (followed by decorations) or Chief Constable, Blankshire Constabulary; or Deputy Chief Constable, Blankshire Constabulary etc. |
| Verbal address | Chief Constable, Deputy Chief Constable etc. or by name |
