Rabbis

Rabbis are teachers and spiritual guides. Rabbis can be teachers in schools or Talmudic academies or can act as spiritual leaders of Synagogue communities.

They can run outreach movements and charities, act as hospital/army/prison/university chaplains or in some cases, hold down everyday jobs without using their Rabbinic qualification.

How to Address a Rabbi

Rabbis are addressed and referred to in speech as, for example, Rabbi Cohen.

The recommended (social) style of address is as follows:

Beginning of letter Dear Rabbi Cohen
End of letter Yours sincerely
Envelope The Rev Rabbi Joseph Cohen
Invitation The Rev Rabbi Joseph Cohen
Joint invitation* The Rev Rabbi Joseph and Mrs Cohen
Description in conversation Rabbi Cohen
List of Directors or Patrons The Rev Rabbi Joseph Cohen

*Note: Traditionally, invitations to a married couple, when sent to their home address, are addressed to the wife alone, with both names being inscribed on the invitation card. It has become increasingly acceptable, however, to address the envelope with both names.
