High Steward of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge

There are no specific duties attached to the offices of high steward, deputy high steward or commissary, all of which are, in effect, honorary appointments, but the high steward may in certain circumstances deputise for the chancellor.

If the subject of the letter concerns his or her university, the style 'Dear High Steward' may be used.

How to Address a High Steward

The recommended style of address is:

Beginning of letter Dear High Steward, or by name
Envelope The High Steward of the University of X; or
The Viscount Blank, The High Steward of the University of X
Verbal communication By name, or High Steward

How to Address a Deputy High Steward of the University of Cambridge

The Deputy High Steward is addressed according to his rank and name. If the subject of the letter concerns his/her university, the form of address is as for the High Steward, with the insertion of the word 'Deputy'.
