If you're a passenger in someone else's car your behaviour must be polite and gracious at all times, just as it would be if you were visiting their home.

The driver is in control of the car and that extends to the controls of the stereo, temperature etc. Don't adjust anything or fiddle with the controls without asking first.

If there are lots of you in the car, be aware of people's personal space. Try to keep to your own seat and give other people as much room as possible.

Engage in conversation but spare a thought for the driver, who has to concentrate on what he/she is doing, and stay quiet during tricky manoeuvres and challenging situations. It is irritating and rude to your driver and fellow passengers to engage in lengthy phone conversations. Answer any urgent calls but try to arrange to call the person back later.

It is the height of rudeness to smoke in someone else's car without their permission. Never smoke in a car when children are present.

If you have anything to eat or drink, be careful not to spill a drop, or leave crumbs. Don't eat smelly foods in confined spaces and take all your rubbish with you. ea

Be considerate and responsible - fasten your seat belt, don't distract the driver, never interfere with the controls of the car. Sit back and enjoy the ride.
