Godparents

A child traditionally has three godparents: a boy has two godfathers and one godmother, and a girl has two godmothers and one godfather.

Now it is acceptable to have several godparents and the mix may vary irrespective of the sex of the child.

While tradition also dictates that a godparent is expected to become the legal guardian of the child should anything happen to the parents, this scenario is unlikely today. If this is the intention, the parents should make a formal statement of their wishes in their wills.
