Invitations

Traditionally, formal invitations were never sent out for Christenings or baptisms. Notification to godparents, friends and family can be made via personal notes, telephone calls or emails, including invitations to any party afterwards.

However, many parents do choose to send out invitations. These are either pre-printed or bespoke cards; the style of the invitation should reflect the level of formality of the service and party.

Pre-printed Invitations

Pre-printed cards are available with spaces left blank for the guests' names, the baby's name, and the date, location and time of the christening to be in written by hand. The pre-printed wording usually reflects the sex of the child, for example:

…request the pleasure of your company at the christening of their son…

Bespoke Invitations

For more formal christenings, traditionally-styled invitations may be sent out. These are usually printed on high-quality white card (600gsm), measuring 5.5" x 7" (14 x 18 cm). The wording would read:

John and Jane Debrett
invite you to celebrate the Christening of
Thomas Edward
at The Church, Richmond, Surrey
on Saturday 7th November 2009
and afterwards at
The Hotel, Richmond, Surrey

Replies

Guests should reply to invitations promptly. The level of formality of the reply should reflect the style and tone of the invitation.

If a very formal invitation is received, it is advisable to reply in the third person, such as for a wedding invitation.
