Win Limited Edition Cornishware China
Win Limited Edition Cornishware China!
Closing date: 31-03-2012
This month's competition consists of a first prize of the newly-launched Cornishware limited edition Betty teapot, an elegant version of the traditional kitchen table pot.
There are two second prizes, each consisting of a pair of
Cornish red mugs, bearing the words 'Diamond' and 'Jubilee',
produced in a limited edition to celebrate the British heritage of
Cornishware.
Cornishware was first produced in the 1920s by T.G.Green & Co,
a Derbyshire pottery company which made a diverse range of
pottery. In the 1960s, Cornishware was updated by a young
designer called Judith Onions and has gone on to become a design
classic, highly prized by collectors.
Cornish Blue's highly distinctive blue and white banded livery is
recognised internationally and the pottery owes its name to an
employee who was reminded of the blue skies and white-crested waves
of Cornwall. An advertising campaign from 1938 included the
line: 'Blue of the Atlantic - White of Cornish Clouds - Glisten of
the Sea - What Woman Could Resist Such Beauty in her
Kitchen!'
Cornishware's trademark blue and white stripes came from the
lathe-turning process, which removed bands of the blue slip to
reveal the white clay beneath. Cornishware has become a
design classic, nominated by the London Design Museum as one of the
Top 100 20th-century design icons.
